CARMICHAEL – John Catlin successfully defended his Memorial Amateur title as he won going away with a 54-hole score of 202. Catlin shot all three rounds in the 60s, the only player to do so, with rounds of 68, 66 and 68 at the par-70 layout. The Carmichael native proved to feel right at home as his score was five shots better than the nearest competitor. Andrej Bevins finished alone in second with a score 207. The 17 year-old from Elk Grove posted rounds of 68, 69 and 70 for a 207 total. Finishing alone in third was Niall Platt with scores of 69, 70 and 71, while Eli Cole finished at level-par 210 with scores 72, 72 and 66. In a four-way tie for fifth place Eric Taylor, Sebastian Vazquez, Austin Smotherman and Johnny Baxter finished at 1-over par 211. Smotherman, from nearby Loomis, started Monday’s final round two shots back of Catlin, but followed his back-to-back 68s with a final round 75.
