May 19-20, 2012
DINUBA – The Junior Tour of Northern California wrapped up its spring season over the weekend with Spring Series VII at Ridge Creek GC in Dinuba, Calif. The tournament not only saw some hot weather, but some scorching hot play by the flights’ different winners.
In the Girls Championship Flight, two-time JTNC Girls Player of the Year, Casie Cathrea, fired an 11-under 36-hole score of 133 to cruise to an 18-shot victory. After her first round of 9-under 63, taking a 10-shot lead, Cathrea managed a 2-under 70 on Sunday, the best score in her flight by seven strokes. The 16 year-old started on the 13th hole in the shotgun start Saturday afternoon and got going quickly with an eagle on 15 and birdies on 16 and 18 to get to 4-under par through six holes. After making pars on the first four holes of the front nine, the Livermore resident birdied holes five, seven, eight, 10 and 11 to get to 9-under par for her bogey-free 63. While she cooled down a little on Sunday, Cathrea still was able to convert 14 pars, three birdies and one bogey in her final round. Coming in at second place was San Jose’s Jessica Luo posting a 36-hole of 151 (74-77). Marissa Hinchman of Lodi took third place shooting a two-day total 152 with rounds of 73 and 79.
The Boys Championship Flight saw some low scores with Cameron Park’s Cory Pereira leading the way, posting a 36-hole score of 140, 4-under par. Pereira, who started Sunday’s final round in a tie for fifth place after a first round 73, made five birdies and no bogeys over the final 18 holes to take a three-shot victory. Starting off the 10th tee, Pereira’s birdies came on holes 13, one, three, seven and nine. Finishing in second place at a two-day total of 143 was Israel Garcia of Dinuba, who also started the day tied for fifth place with Periera. Garcia bettered his Saturday score by three shots Sunday with a 2-under par 70, which included six birdies and four bogeys on the day. Taking third place was Spring Series VI winner Ryan Han, who came up short of winning back-to-back tournaments as he posted a two-day total of 144, even par. The Hollister resident, who started Sunday one shot off the lead, followed his first round 71 with a round of 73. First round leader Danny Ro of Alameda finished in a tie for fourth place with Roseville’s Corey Eddings as both players finished with a two-day aggregate of 145.
Reedley’s Luke Foster won the Boys First Flight with a 36-hole score of 6-over par, 150. Taking a three shot lead into Sunday after a 1-over 73 Saturday, Foster shot a 77 Sunday to take a two-stroke victory over Rajvir Bedi of San Jose. Bedi proved his consistency with back-to-back scores of 76 for a 152 total and a solo second place finish. Finishing in third place was Brendan Hy of San Ramon, who shot rounds of 76 and 78 for a two-day aggregate of 154.
In the Girls First Flight Sabrina Virtusio of Antioch earned her third victory of 2012 with a 36-hole score of 11-over par 155. Vritusio, who previously won Spring Series IV and V, took a six-stroke victory over nearest competitor Noor Ahmed of Folsom. Ahmed’s 161 total was closely followed by third place finisher Brianna Areia, who posted a 36-hole score of 163.
