SANTA CRUZ – NCGA members Andrew Buchanan, Matt Cohn and Bryson DeChambeau advanced to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying with their efforts Monday. Playing at Pasatiempo GC the three players posted one of the top six scores to advance to the June 4 date at Lake Merced GC. Buchanan of Los Altos Hills shot the low round of the three finishing in a tie for third with a score of even-par 70. Buchanan went 35-35 with two birdies and two bogeys on each nine. His birdies came on holes two, six 11 and 13, while his bogeys came on Nos. four, seven, 10 and 16.

DeChambeau and Cohn tied for fifth place, capturing the last two spots beating out three other players in a playoff who also finished at 1-over 71. DeChambeau, teeing off the 10th tee got off to a rough start in his round as he bogeyed three of his first six holes (10, 12 and 15). Furthermore after a bogey on No. five, putting him at 4-over on the day and still without a birdie on his card, the Clovis resident had to make a late rally birdieing the last three holes (seven, eight and nine) to qualify for the playoff. Cohn also got off to a shaky start bogeying holes two and three, but birdied No. four to get back on track. His back nine included bogeys on holes 11 and 14, while he made birdies on Nos. 12 and 17. DeChambeau and Cohn beat out Ronald Monaco, Sebastian Crampton and Lee Haeyong in the playoff with Crampton earning first alternate and Monaco earning second alternate.

The other three participants to qualify were three professional golfers Eddie Olson, Steve Holmes and John Murphy. Olson of Aptos and Simi Valley’s Holmes tied for low honors with 1-under 71. Murphy tied with Buchanan for third with an even-par 70. The six players who qualified, advance to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying at Lake Merced GC in Daly City June 4 or one of 10 other Sectional Qualifying sites.
