PEBBLE BEACH – The South Bay Zone tournament concluded Tuesday afternoon in wild fashion as Blackberry Farm GCC prevailed in a five-hole playoff to join the champions of Saratoga CC as the top two finishers.  The two clubs earned the opportunity to play in the 2012 NCGA Zone Championship from August 27-28at Poppy Hills and Spyglass Hill.

South Bay Zone Runner-ups: James Gordon, Mike Guidry, Christopher Neves and John Regan of Blackberry Farm GCC

The zone tournament was set up where the two best scores on a hole from a four person team are recorded.  This format allowed Saratoga CC to finish the tournament 33-under par and shoot a final day score of 126, making their tournament total 253.  The club members of Tom Arnold, Jack Smith, Tom Howell and Pat Ramos posted four eagles and one double eagle on the last day to seal the tournament.  As the tournament concluded Smith stated, “It was definitely a team effort.” 

James Gordon, John Regan, Mike Guidry and Christopher Neves from Blackberry Farm GCC finished the tournament with a final score of 257.  San Jose was defeated in the playoffs, followed by Almaden GCC and Eagle Ridge GC, who each respectably shot a final score of 259 to round out the top five.

CARMEL – NCGA zone play kicked off Monday with North Bay and South Bay zones playing at Poppy Hills and Quail Lodge respectively. Teams from the South Bay Zone were competing at Quail Lodge Monday and after the first day the Almaden GCC team consisting of Donald Di Tullio, Kent Hiura, Kendall Wilcox and Steven Yoshioka lead the event with a net score of 17-under par. Not far behind in second place are the teams of Saratoga CC and Coyote Creek GC at 15-under par. Rounding out the top-five is Eagle Ridge GC and San Jose CC tied at 14-under par 128.

The scoring format for the event takes the two low net scores of four player teams per hole. The two top teams at the conclusion of tomorrow’s event will qualify for NCGA Zone Championship held at Spyglass Hill on August 27 and 28.
