San Francisco City Championships

TPC Harding Park
March 10-11, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO – Four new SF city champions were crowned over the weekend. In the premier event, the men’s championship, Cody Blick of Danville capped off his impressive play over the past few weeks with a 2 up victory over Menlo Park’s Wes Payne on Sunday. Blick came into the event as the 31st seed first and had to get through a bevy of exceptional players. On Saturday after beating Nick Noya 3 and 2, he had his second extra-hole match of the event, beating Alex Franklin in 19 holes. Payne also had very competitive matches to make it to the final beating Jake Yount 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals and Shintaro Ban 3 and 2 in the semifinals.

Alexandra Wong cruised to win the women’s championship, never having to play past the 15th hole this weekend. After an extra-hole match in the first round last weekend, Wong started this weekend with a 4 and 3 victory over Erika Salinas on Saturday morning. She then beat defending champion Hannah Suh in a semifinal matchup that afternoon 5 and 3 to make it to the Sunday final. There she dominated against Jayshree Sarathy and won 7 and 6.

The senior division saw Jim Williams take down Steven Hakes in another down-to-the-wire match as Williams prevailed on the 18th hole 1 up. Williams beat John Seed in the semifinals 3and 2, while it took Hakes 20 holes to fend off Scott Anderson. The super senior division, in its inaugural year, had two Napa residents battle it out as David Carroll beat Bruce Wold in 19 holes. Carroll beat Robert Callan in the semifinals with rather ease 5 and 4, while Wold had a slightly more competitive match with Bob Olds, a 3 and 2 margin of victory.
