PEBBLE BEACH – Torrey Pines High School defended the title it captured last year by winning the CIF/CGA/NCGA Girls High School State Championship with a strong 381 total, just two strokes in front of runner-up Torrance.

Torrey Pines (San Diego) was led by Sarah Cho’s one-under-par 71 and identical 76s by Jennifer Peng and Sandy Choi in the format that takes the top five of six individual scores.  Minjia Luo has the shot of the day as she aced the 17th hole, the first ever hole-in-one in the state championship’s history.

“We had such a strong team and so much depth,” said Torrey Pines head coach Chris Drake.  “Any one of these girls could have won as an individual title, but we came together as a team.”

In a turn of events, one of Coach Drake’s players won the individual title.  Sarah Cho won a two-hole playoff against Palm Desert’s Cha Cha Willhoite after they tied at 71 after regulation.   The event marked Cho’s first-ever playoff appearance.

“I tried to play it like any other hole,” said the champion, a Torrey Pines sophomore.  “I knew it was a hard course, so I didn’t expect to win.”

The top five individual finishers, excluding the champion and runner-up, include Shawnee Martinez of Enochs (72), Anne Cheng of Torrance (72), Kathleen Scavo of Justin-Siena (74), Anna Zhou of Gunn (75) and Samantha Martin of Torrance (75).
